Whether it is an e book you find by searching these sites I’ve listed, a manual for your Jeep Wrangler, or a Greek Cookbook. Sometimes it is fun to hoard e books, just like many of us like to never let go of our hardcover books.

What you will find below in these sites are many different ways to find e books to read on your e book reader. Some of the sites offer many of the same books for download, only presented to you differently. Some sites offer e books that are unique to them. The benefit of some of these resources is how the list of e books is presented to you.

PeJome

PeJome is a nice and simple way to search and get e books for your Kindle or mobi pocket device. When you search on this web site you are basically searching the Project Gutenberg web site. These books are all free and in the public domain. PeJome does all of the converting and spits out the E Book for you within 15 seconds in most cases.

Feed Books

FeedBooks is probably the most popular option for Kindle users. There website is easy to browse and understand. They offer helpful lists of books within categories, most popular books, and even a random book button. Feedbooks is a website that is operated in France with a mission to make the availability of free public domain e books easily accessible. The offer e books in many formats and any device that can read a PDF file will work fine.

Many Books

Many Books is a great site to browse and find something of interest. The website is well laid out and you are able to search among authors, categories, titles, and languages. Some example categories are: Post 1930, Espionage, Harvard Classics, to Pirate Tales. Obviously some great reading can be found here. The e books here are all downloaded in PDF format.

Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg is the Grand Daddy of all e book sources. They have a huge collection of e books available and many other sites only use their available e book collection and arrange it differently. Project Gutenberg is an actual Wiki made up of contributors all over the World. They also have taken almost every public domain book known to man and cataloged it within their vast database.

Scribd

Scribd is probably the site with the most user interaction. They offer a real value when you visit. Not only are you given access to millions of free e books you join a community of users you can share interests with for further reading ideas. Scribd also has some very unique content that is often times extremely interesting even just to glance over. The offer their e books either in plain text format or PDF format.

Amazon

Yes, even Amazon has books available for the Kindle at no cost. Many times they are a promotion from the publishing house, or a promotion from Amazon themselves. Sometimes these free Kindle books make it to the top of the best seller list, which has created somewhat of a buzz among the grass roots Kindle community as far as “list fixing” and wrongly categorizing works of indie authors. That’s a whole different story.

Mobile Read

The Mobile Read forums are the busiest and most informative forums on the internet when it comes to e readers and e books. They stepped it up a notch and made their own list of free public domain books. The list is currently over 3,000 books large and has some great reads in it.

Planet E Book

Planet E Book is a nice condensed list of classical literature available for download as PDF. This website has nothing really to it other than that. I like that you can look at one page and see the titles of around 50 classical reads and go for it. Makes for a quick easy visit.

Free Kindle Books

Free Kindle Books is a web site that categorizes books from the Project Gutenberg. What is nice about this site is on the front page is a huge list of Authors just to scroll down on. This is great sometimes when you are just browsing with no Author in mind to just see a list and go from there. They also offer for download the Project Gutenberg catalog via PDF.

EBookee

EBookee is a great source for that odd e book you would never imagine existed. They have e books available in many categories, especially computer and IT.  They have e books written by normal internet users such as how to guides, blogging guides, and software guides. Cons: sometimes their links do not work and the site can be a little spammy.

PDF Geni

PDF Geni is a really cool tool more than a place to download e books. It is really a search engine for PDF files, easily put on an e book reader or Kindle. One search gives you many results on any topic imaginable. This is a definite favorite among many Kindle and computer users.

Ibiblio

Ibiblio coins itself “The National Public Library and Digital Archive”. They are much like the Gutenberg Project but with more emphasis on education. This site would be a great resource for any high school or college student. They have e books on language, math, science, religion, history, geography, and everything else in between.

Munseys

Munseys is a site created for mobile devices to search their categories listed on their front page. This site works great with a PDA, Kindle, and Blackberry. They have thousands of e books that are easily downloaded. The web site looks very basic and is no frills, this is so that it can more easily be browsed with a mobile device.

Book Yards

Book Yards is a great way to browse an impressive collection of e books in PDF format. They have a great category and author listing making it easy to find a previously unknown book. They have categories from Spanish to Military. I even found a cool guide for the US Marine Corps M 40 Rifle, who would have known.

LibriVox

LibriVox is actually a web site for free Audio Books. What they do is have users or volunteers read and record books that are already free in the public domain on their own, and upload the files into the public domain for free download. They currently have over 2,000 audio books available for free download. Very cool idea.

Wowio

Wowio is a new type of website offering free e book downloads. They have a business model that is able to profit while you can still get limited free downloads. Once you become a user you are entitled to a certain amount of free e book downloads, and you can also purchase e books for yourself or friends for minimal cost.

Free E  Books

Free E Books is a site that hosts e books from a range of interesting topics from personal health to poetry. They have many titles available that you will not be able to find on other sites. The downside is that this web site is cluttered with ads and you have to become a member to download.

Online Books at University of Pennsylvania

This is a huge database of e books available for free download from the University of Pennsylvania. Many of these e books are nowhere else to be found. Many of these e books are research papers from college students and professors. This would be a great research tool for students of all ages.

Read Print

Read Print is a beautiful web site that is very well laid out and easily accessible. They do things a little different though. They do not actually offer e books, instead entire books, split up by chapters, available to read directly on their web site. Kindle users can browse here and so can any other reader that can read html.

The Internet Archive of Libraries

This was the most fun web site for me to browse around. If it isn’t the largest it certainly seems so. They give you access to several libraries, including the Gutenberg libraries. The Universal library seemed to me the most interesting. Files are easily viewed and downloaded in PDF format.

Online Free E Books

I found repair manuals for Porsche transmissions on this site among many things. This is a really cool site for quick visit to see if anything trips your interest. This site is very much automobile oriented, however also has manuals on karate and chess.

His book, Warrior of the Light, is less a traditional story and more of a manual for life.  Paulo Coelho released the book in 1997, however the passages from the book are a compilation of written work published in several Brazilian Newspapers in the years of 1993 to 1996.

This is the only free blog available for you Kindle (to my knowledge).  This blog is from Amazon, and talks mostly about the Kindle Reader.  I would imagine that getting this blog would be a no brainer. Who can resist helpful hints and cool book suggestions?

The New York Times – Latest News

This is the most popular paid blog subscription for the Kindle.  The New York Times is probably the only newspaper in the US that isn’t quickly dying.  They offer intelligent reading, very cool articles, and a huge amount of reading.  Reading their Sunday paper takes an entire day almost.  $1.99/month

Huffington Post

The Huffington Post has quickly become one of the most popular websites on the internet for people to get their news.  This rise to fame can be attributed to their awesome reporting during the Presidential Election of 2008. This is a great place to get news that other people aren’t talking about. $1.99/month

The Onion

The Onion is bar-none, the most entertaining and funny news site ever made in the history of man.  They are somehow to consistently create a good amount of content without ever missing a beat.  Often times, I laugh so hard I cry. $1.99/month

The Clutter Diet Blog

This has become quite the popular blog for the Kindle recently.  I’m not sure why, but thought I would mention it.  The Clutter Diet Blog isn’t about loosing weight, or finding a new and improved wife / mistress, its a Blog about organizing your house, garage, closets, kitchen, all that boring stuff.  If your into that though, check it out, I guess it’s cool otherwise. $0.99/month

AP US News

The News from the Associated Press sent to your Kindle, very cool.  The Associated Press has become the most trusted source of high quality news information and are great at delivery great stories that are never outdated.  If I was on a stranded island, with a Kindle and a coconut, and allowed to only get 1 blog per month on my Kindle, this would be a close second to The Onion. $1.99/month

Gizmodo

Due to the nature of the Kindle, everyone who owns one will inherently have some nerdish qualities.  Gizmodo is the perfect nerd-quencher.  You can stay up to date with all the new electronic toys and gadgets and probably get some cool articles about how everyone is jealous of your Kindle. $1.99/month

TechCrunch

TechCrunch is going to be the more web-centric blog than Gizmodo.  Articles directed more towards IT managers, web-designers, and people really just crazily addicted to the Internet.  The cool thing about TechCrunch is that there is so much content that they put out it is hard to not find something of interest to you. $1.99/month

Daily Kos

The Daily Kos is the perfect blog to read if you are considering forming your own militia, or just to get a feel for the state of politics in The United States.  Known for its breaking edge articles and highly user driven content, the Daily Kos is a really interesting read, if you can get over the activism scented articles. $0.99/month

Michelle Malkin

Blogs written by one person are my favorite types.  Michelle Malkin has a great writing style on topics such as politics, current events, and pop culture.  She is touted as being a conservative writer, so if your not into that, stay away.  In America you get a choice to choose, not the power to take away from others. There’s my politics for the day! $1.99/month

This book closely examines what it took for a product, message, or idea to take off.  Malcolm goes through many examples which he researched and attempted to determine the reason or cause of what made that product or idea go mainstream.

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

This book by Malcolm Gladwell is a close study of how we make our decisions.  The title suggests that for the most part our decisions are made with little or no effort, sort of like our brains being on auto-pilot.  Malcolm suggests that indeed our first impressions are automatic and are in fact genetically coded within our brains in accordance with our survival instincts.  A very interesting read.

Outliers: The Story of Success

Outliers is an examination of a few people and why those people have overcome the statistical average by leaps and bounds.  The book looks closely at statistics and attempts to uncover why some people are, unaided by luck, many times more successful or influential that even the statistical average.

Senator Bob Graham is brought on to the show to tell Steve that he in fact did not ever get briefed by the C.I.A. about water boarding and advanced torture techniques they may be employing.  This was in response to Nancy Pelosi denying the same accusations. In true Colbert fashion, Steve pokes a little fun at Bob and his use of a diary and becomes the devils advocate in response to Bobs alibi about the C.I.A. briefings.

Written by Daniel Gross

Daniel Gross is an author whom specializes in business history.  He states “To save the economy, we need to stop saving”. In this book he describes in detail many of the follies that the people of the United States are committing and often times how they were urged upon us by our government.  One of the strongest cases he puts forth is our use of the savings system in relation to idle funds and poor utilization of retirement account savings. Steve stops Dan short when he attempts to put some blame on the Bush administration, it’s the everlasting hard-core republican in him he loves to bring out.

Oh, Johnny: A Novel

Written by Jim Lehrer

Jim Lehrer’s 19 book he has authored all while being a high profile news reporter.  This book is about an 18 year old kid from Maryland who runs off to fight the Japanese in 1944 during World War 2.  This book is noted as the first book in which Jim writes about a sex scene, reviewed as being an elementary account, nonetheless entertaining and comedic. Steve asks why he would take so long to write a sex scene and Jim responds in kind stating that he firmly believes in research.  Touted as a great story about life and youthfulness.

The Thirteen American Arguments: Enduring Debates That Define and Inspire Our Country

Written by Howard Fineman

Howard Fineman points out an excellent point with this book about how Democracy in America is supposed to work. Stating that for our country and government to work properly we need to argue more, not less. The topic of this book reminds me of the way Obama is beginning to mix up political views within party lines, by asking people to throw the facts on the table and debate until their hair falls out.  He expands on this idea by pointing out the extreme and unfavorable side of debate, our American Civil War.  Furthermore, he believes that people need to see the humanity in what they are debating, allowing for an acceptable means to keep our Democracy alive.

The Graveyard Book

Written by Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman writes a wonderful book that has grabbed the attention of readers from young to less-young.  He states simply that the moral of the book could be said to be that “Life is Worth Living”, and “Sometimes you need to leave your childhood behind and get on with your life”.  Steve jibes back asking if there is a danger that children will stop being afraid of graveyards. Neil takes hits from Steve easier than ever and is really able to bring across the message and content of his book in confidence.

Strapped: Why America’s 20- and 30-Somethings Can’t Get Ahead

Written by Tamara Draut

A well written book about a very relatable topic in today’s economy. Steven brings her in to talk about the practices of credit card companies amidst the upcoming government regulation of the credit card industry. Tamara has evaluated and done her research well, uncovering some shocking information such as this quote from her book, “Today’s college grads are making less than the college grads of thirty years ago.” Her book goes into the complexity of the job market, costs of living, and the treacheries of credit card debt.

Lost in the Meritocracy: The Undereducation of an Overachiever

Written by Walter Kirn

Walter Kirn authors a book about the current state of education in America.  He takes an out of the box view on the way we educate our selves and slowly picks it apart to deduct that “people who are very good at crossword puzzles end up running the country, and fail”.  Furthermore, the present system of meritocracy doesn’t reward depth, only simple reciting and the regurgitation of facts.  Walter goes back and forth with Steve, as he is very forthcoming with his Princeton education, and their conversation ends up being quite revealing as to what his book might be about.

While I admit, the Kindle is not the cure all for the newspaper business, it does provide an alternative and viable way to read a newspaper.  The Amazon Kindle currently offers subscriptions for 37 newspapers around the world.  Most being from the larger cities in the United States, however some come from Nations and Cities abroad.

Let’s take a look at what Newspapers the Kindle offers that aren’t printed in English.  There are 5 papers not printed in English, however I included the Shanghai Daily in this list because of the foreign nature of it.

Le Monde

Le Monde is the de facto newspaper of France, therefore written in the French language.  This newspaper has been in circulation since 1944 and continues to have success in France.  Though circulation has been dropping since 2002, they have seen increased use of their online content.

Frankfurter Allgemeine

The Frankfurter Allgemeine is the most popular newspaper in circulation in Germany.  They have over 1 million daily readers and have a large following outside of Germany.  Founded in 1949.  The newspaper is printed in German.

Shanghai Daily

The Shanghai Daily comes from China is, for the most part, business oriented.  The newspapers is sent to your Kindle in English.  This is one of only 2 newspapers in China printed in English and caters to English speaking travelers and Chinese residents who wish to learn / study English as a second language.

Les Echos

Les Echos is the premier financial publication of France, printed in French.  It is the first daily publication in France and was founded in 1908.  This, like all newspapers for the Kindle, come with a 14 day free trial.

Handelsblatt

Handelsblatt is the leading financial publication in Germany. Founded in 1946 and printed in German, the Handelsblatt has become known for its critical reporting.  This newspaper is printed every trading day, Monday through Friday.

Corriere Della Sera

The Corriere Della Sera is most famous and important newspaper in Italy.  Founded in 1876 and still printed in Milan.  This newspaper covers all aspects of Italian life.  Offering sections on culture, opinion, sport, business, events, entertainment, and current trends.

Who isn’t a fan of Stephen Colbert? I cannot think of anyone, except for maybe George Bush. His recent book is turning out to be a great read and is doing well on the shelves, and on the Kindle. So what’s this book about and what is everyone saying about it?
